UDS Board of Directors Nomination Form UDS shall have nine (9) officers: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Director of Communications, Director of Competitions, Director of Membership, Director of Education and Director of Events. Each officer shall be a member of the Board of Directors Term of Office: a. The members shall elect the officers per the process outlined in the Rules. Officers shall hold office for a term of two (2) years. b. The President, Secretary, Director of Membership and Director of Events are elected for terms to begin January 1st of even-numbered years. c. The Vice President, Treasurer, Director of Competitions, Director of Communications, and Director of Education are elected for terms to begin January 1st of odd-numbered years. Others may still be eligible to fill open board positions interim. I am over 18 years of age or will turn 18 prior to November 30th President: The President shall be the chief executive officer of UDS. He or she shall preside at meetings of the Board of Directors and meetings of the members. The President shall represent UDS with all organizations requiring such representation and shall be the official UDS spokesperson before the public. Secretary: The Secretary shall take accurate minutes of all meetings of the Board of Directors and of all meetings of the members. The Secretary shall maintain the minutes and the permanent records of UDS. Director of Membership: The Director of Membership shall develop and execute programs to increase the UDS membership. The Director of Membership shall maintain the membership list and assist the other officers by providing membership information to them. Director of Events: The Director of Events shall be responsible for the UDS Annual Awards Banquet and Silent Auction. Complete entries will be accepted first come‐‐‐first served. No more than 4 rides per day per horse. The show committee reserves the right to cancel, combine, or split classes, to change arenas, to refuse any entry and to limit the number of rides per rider to facilitate scheduling. On show day, riders who scratch must notify the show secretary no later than 30 minutes before the scheduled time. NO REFUNDS after the closing date. Refunds will NOT be given for severe weather, accident, or other emergency. Times and Updates: Provisional ride times will be posted on the web at www.utahdressagesociety.com . It is the competitor's responsibility to confirm ride times on the day of the show. Awards: ● Open Show: Ribbons will be awarded for first place through fourth place. In the event of a tie, the total of the collective marks will determine the placing. If the tie remains, both riders will receive a ribbon for the placing in which they tied. ● High Point: A high point prize may be offered at show management discretion. Dress : Full show attire required for first level and above, tall dressage boots or paddock boots with half chaps are acceptable. Riders will be notified if coats are made optional. Should this happen, you must wear a white (or lightly colored) shirt with short sleeves; remove the stock tie. Western Dressage Dress: Good, clean, functional, working western tack is perfect for Western Dressage; there is no need for special tack or embellishments. The recommended rider attire is more conservative in style with the goal of keeping the focus on the horse. See the WDAA Equipment and Attire Guide for details. The UDS award year begins December 1st and ends the following November 30th. Year-end award scores must be earned during the membership year (December 1st and ends the following November 30th); and must have been earned at a USEF/USDF/UDS recognized show. It is the RIDER'S RESPONSIBILITY to be a current UDS member at the time the score was earned for the score to be counted towards year-end awards. It is the RIDER'S RESPONSIBILITY to confirm that the recorded horse OWNER is a current UDS member at the time the score was earned for the score to be counted towards year-end awards. EXCEPT if the Rider is a Junior UDS Member, in that case the horse’s owner does not need to be a UDS Member. It is the RIDER'S RESPONSIBILITY to confirm their scores with the Tabulation Committee before the deadline for awards recognition. The horse must also have a USDF Horse identification (HID) or Lifetime Horse Registration number (LHR). Scores will be accepted from USDF and FEI recognized classes with the exception of quadrille, pas de deux, the FEI Young Rider Individual Test, the Young Rider Grand Prix Test and breed-restricted classes. UDS Short Tour scores qualify for Short Tour Series year-end awards only and are not combined with scores from USDF rated shows. Year-end Awards shall be awarded to the same horse-and-rider combination at the UDS Annual Awards Banquet. Awards are limited to no more than two (2) consecutive levels (freestyles included) for a horse and rider combination in the membership year. Any horse-and-rider combination that wins a first place year-end award in training through fourth level may only qualify for a year-end award for the same level and division no more than 2 times as long as the same horse and rider combination continue to advance through the levels. EXCEPTIONS: a. FEI level, Pas de deux, Quadrille and Para. b. In Freestyle Training-Second, the same horse and rider combination may be awarded a Year-end Award no more than 3 times as long as the same horse and rider combination continue to advance through the levels. c. In Freestyle Third-Fourth, the same horse and rider combination may be awarded a Year-end Award no more than two times as long as the same horse and rider combination continue to advance through the levels Year-end awards shall be awarded for the following levels: Training, First, Second, Third, Fourth, Prix St. George Georges, Intermediaire, Grand Prix, Freestyle: Training-2nd, Freestyle: 3rd-4th, Freestyle: FEI, Pas de Deux, Para and Quadrille in Junior-Young Rider, Adult Amateur, and Open Divisions. For Training through Fourth Levels, the Year-end Award shall be based upon the average of the top five (5) scores from three (3) different shows and two (2) different judges. Two (2) of those scores must be from the highest test of the level. Other class scores such as Dressage Medal Seat, etc. do not qualify. For Freestyle levels, FEI level, Pas de deux, and Quadrille, the Year-end Awards shall be based upon the average of the top three (3) scores from two (2) different judges. (Freestyle scores only count toward Freestyle awards). For Para, the Year-end Awards shall be based upon the average of the top three (3) scores from two (2) different judges and all Para grades (1a, 1b,2,3 and 4) will be considered together for our year-end awards. Para riders must have a Dispensation card either from the USEF or the FEI that states their Grade and the allowable compensating aids. Para riders must ride either the FEI Para Team Test, or Individual Championship test for their official Grade. To be eligible for UDS Year End Awards (including Perpetual Trophies and Equine Achievement Awards) riders must complete at least 4 hours of volunteer time that is approved by a UDS Board Member. Members can elect a proxy volunteer to perform their volunteer hours in place of them, as long as the proxy is a direct family member. Short Tour Year-End Awards Shows are recognized as UDS-only short tour shows. Tests offered must include Intro-2nd Level. Higher level tests may be offered, however scores from those tests would not count towards year-end awards. Scores from the Short Tour Series are NOT transferable to the USEF/USDF licensed judge shows and vice-versa. Judges must be “L” program graduates or otherwise approved by the UDS board of directors. It is the RIDER’S RESPONSIBILITY to be a current UDS member at the time the score was earned for the score to be counted toward year-end awards. Riders need not be UDS members to ride in these shows. However, they will be charged a non-member fee to compete. If the rider is not the horse owner, the owner does not need to be a UDS member to qualify for year-end awards Year-end award scores must be earned during the membership year (December 1st through the following November 30th); and must have been earned by UDS members at Short Tour Series shows. Perpetual Trophies The UDS perpetual trophies are awarded based on scores earned only at UDS/USEF/USDF recognized shows that are physically in Utah and awarded at the UDS Annual Banquet. It is awarded to the highest percentage of that level regardless of the division. Equine Achievement Awards UDS designed this award to spotlight exceptional equine talent. Equine Achievement Awards are awarded to an individual horse. The horse’s owner will receive, as an award, an engraved plaque for the first UDS Achievement Award the horse earns. An engraved notation will be added to the plaque for each subsequent UDS Equine Achievement Award the horse earns. A single horse may be awarded only one (1) UDS Equine Achievement Award at each level; however, a horse may be awarded a UDS Equine Achievement Award at every level. (Scores do not need to be earned with the same rider) There is no time limit for earning qualifying scores. However, because the UDS Equine Achievement Award program began in 2001, only qualifying scores earned during 2001 and later, shall count toward the award. To apply for the equine achievement award, BOTH the horse’s owner and the horse’s rider must be members of UDS at the time the score is earned. The rider must be a UDS member, having a USDF GMO membership number. The owner must be a UDS member, having a USDF GMO membership number. The horse must have a USDF Horse identification (HID) or Lifetime Horse Registration number (LHR). To earn a UDS Equine Achievement Award, the horse must earn five (5) scores at a given level, and each score must be a minimum of: 65% at Training Level 64% at First Level 63% at Second Level 62% at Third Level 61% at Fourth Level 60% at the FEI Levels and Para Scores must come from USDF/USEF recognized shows. Scores from the following classes do not qualify for the Equine Achievement Award: Freestyle, Opportunity, Pas de Deux, & Quadrille. Short Tour scores do not count towards Equine Achievement Awards. UDS Show Recognition Form The Utah Dressage Society recognizes two (2) show formats: Shows that conform to USEF and USDF Dressage division rules; Shows that conform to the UDS Short Tour Series rules. For either format, show management must pay a show recognition fee to UDS. The fee is $50 for each day of show recognition. If the show is one show over 2 days the fee is $50. About Us The Utah Dressage Society (UDS), an affiliate of the United States Dressage Federation (USDF), exists to educate, promote, encourage, and inspire its members and the general public through programs, publications, and competitions, in a way that enhances the image of dressage and promotes the welfare of the horse. Dressage is the gradual, harmonious advancement of the horse, both physically and mentally, to develop its natural abilities and to make riding a graceful and pleasurable experience. The programs of the society shall be educational and competitive and provide a framework in which individuals can progress with the schooling of their horses and themselves. Our mission is to educate, inspire, and encourage dressage riders around the state of Utah, and to promote the sport of dressage in our community. History of the Utah Dressage Society Established in 1969 by dressage enthusiasts, including Johanna and Eva Adolphi, the Utah Dressage Society (UDS) has flourished into a vibrant community. The first meeting drew eight individuals, sparking the inception of our passionate journey. The inaugural Utah Dressage Society Annual Show on August 19, 1972, featured 25 horses and 33 riders. By 1975, it gained recognition with Elizabeth Friedlander Searle as the judge. Today, the UDS Annual Show in August boasts 200 rides over two days with two "S" judges. With nearly 200 members, UDS continues to grow as dressage spreads through the "wild west." Our roots trace back to an early schooling show in 1969 or 1970, where a simple sheet of paper led to the formation of a dedicated dressage club. Since then, UDS has become a hallmark of excellence in equestrian circles. Meet the Board of Directors John Maznicki PRESIDENT John has been involved with Utah Dressage for 10+ years competing, breeding, coaching and volunteering. I took a break from riding when I went to college in Washington to study Spanish and accounting. After passing my cpa exams i decided to get back into riding, which is not only where i was introduced to dressage, but also my lesson horse Harley - who I eventually bought. Because of my analytical brain, I immediately started loving dressage and we have been a team ever since! We have participated in many short tour shows over the years and just started showing in recognized shows this past season. I volunteer wherever I’m needed from scribing to gate calling or test reading. At 12 I was given a horse and by 19, when we got our own property, the emphasis changed to Dressage I was a founding member of the Utah Dressage Society and served on the board for 33 years! I am now the adviser to the board. I have been a show secretary, show manager, and competitor. I am a USEF licensed Technical Delegate and enjoy traveling to shows in other states. I also enjoy working with my students. I attend the USDF Convention every year now that I am retired, usually as a delegate. When she was a teenager growing up in Sandy, she went down the street to a family's stables, and asked to work in exchange for riding lessons. Unfortunately they usually forgot to give her lessons, but she got very good at mucking out stalls! Kim graduated from BYU with a degree in Ballroom Dance (which was also how she met her husband: they were competition partners). After living out east for 14 years, Kim and her family moved back to Utah, and she finally realized her dream of starting to learn to ride! Dressage feels like a natural switch from ballroom dance: the partnership, the technique, the constant striving to be better, then even better! After riding for 6 years, Kim's husband asked "when are you going to do a dressage show?" Becoming part of the Utah Dressage Society and entering shows has been such an amazing experience, and Kim is excited to use her extensive secretarial skills (developed over 22 years and 5 kids!) to help support the board of the Utah Dressage Society! membership@utahdressagesociety.com Sian Griffiths DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS Siân Griffiths lives and rides in Ogden, Utah. A former jumper turned dressage rider, she competes as an adult amateur, working her way up the levels with her beloved Holsteiner, Larry. After working for the U.S. Equestrian Team in 1999-2000, fund raising for the Sydney Olympic Games, Siân decided to pursue her passion for fiction writing and earned her PhD at the University of Georgia. She now serves as a professor of English and Creative Writing at Weber State University and is the author of the novels Borrowed Horses (New Rivers Press), Scrapple (Braddock Avenue Books), the short fiction chapbook The Heart Keeps Faulty Time (Bull City Press), and, most recently, the essay collection The Sum of Her Parts (University of Georgia Press). She is an athletic trainer who worked with Utah Gymnastics for 10 years before starting work with a local hand surgeon. She also runs her own business doing injury evaluations, Rehabilitation/injury prevention, strength and conditioning and bio mechanical analysis. After her 30th birthday, she decided to get back into riding after a long break. Last year, she bought her first horse, Midnight Sun “Odin”, and is excited to start showing him.
