- Equine Achievement Awards
You have until December 1st to submit scores for Equine Achievement Awards! Equine Achievement Awards: 1. UDS designed this award to spotlight exceptional equine talent. Equine Achievement Awards are awarded to a particular horse. 2. There is no time limit for earning qualifying scores. However, because the UDS Equine Achievement Award program began in 2001, only qualifying scores earned during 2001 and later, shall count toward the award. 3. As defined below, to apply for the equine achievement award, BOTH the horse’s owner and the horse’s rider must be members of UDS at the time the score is earned: a. The rider must be a UDS member, having a USDF GMO membership number. b. The owner must be a UDS member, having a USDF GMO membership number. c. The horse must have a USDF Horse identification (HID) or Lifetime Horse Registration number (LHR). 4. The horse’s owner will receive, as an award, an engraved plaque for the first UDS Achievement Award the horse earns. An engraved notation will be added to the plaque for each subsequent UDS Equine Achievement Award the horse earns. 5. A single horse may be awarded only one (1) UDS Equine Achievement Award at each level; however, a horse may be awarded a UDS Equine Achievement Award at every level. 6. To earn a UDS Equine Achievement Award, the horse must earn five (5) scores at a given level, and each score must be a minimum of: 65% at Training Level 64% at First Level 63% at Second Level 62% at Third Level 61% at Fourth Level 60% at the FEI Levels and Para 7. Scores must come from USDF/USEF recognized shows. 8. Short Tour scores do not count towards Equine Achievement Awards.
- Meet the Candidate: Secretary
Here is a bit about nominee for secretary, Margaret Cluff. I grew up on a 20-horse Morgan farm in California before moving to Utah in 2004. In 2011, I purchased my first Arabian cross and have been a bred devotee ever since. I've competed in both sport and main ring disciplines, qualifying for Arabian nationals in both training and 1st level dressage, as well as other non- dressage disciplines. I have served on show committees for the Utah Arabian Horse Club, as well as in various organizations in California. I'm happy to bring organizational skills and a desire to serve the Utah dressage community. - Margaret Cluff
- Meet the Candidate: President
Here is a bit about nominee for President, Lindi Kopecko, DVM. For the past year, I have served as the UDS secretary. It has been an absolute joy to be part of such an amazing, dedicated, forward thinking group of dressage enthusiasts. While I am sad to see our current president, Stacy, step off of the board, I am very excited at the opportunity to serve as UDS president. Serving as secretary has given me an in depth look at UDS, the team of people that makes up the board, the status of dressage in Utah, and the needs that of both UDS and dressage in Utah for the future. I am excited for this next year and hope to strengthen and grow our Utah dressage community. I have been riding dressage since I was 8 years old. I am currently riding a 2005 Appaloosa/Holsteiner gelding named “Kuu.” Whether Kuu and I are trail riding, jumping over some cross rails, or in an actual dressage court, we are both always working towards our next trip down center line. My “day” job is that of a small animal veterinary surgeon. While in the clinic, I work with a team of approximately 15 people. Even though I am the veterinarian, I am only one person on that team and strongly believe that the team and the job we do depends equally on every person on the team. I know that my immense dedication to dressage and my strong team member capabilities, as well as being organized and forward thinking, will contribute to my success as UDS president. I have a strong desire to help the UDS board remain strong and approachable. I also greatly hope to grow our UDS community and help other horse enthusiasts see that being a UDS member is not a benefit solely reserved for those who only ride dressage. - Lindi Kopecko, DVM
- Meet the Candidate: Treasurer
Here is a bit about nominee for Treasurer, Susan Helier When a job transfer landed me in Utah (a New York via California transplant), I never intended to be here long. That was thirty years ago. During that time, I’ve raised a daughter, Madeline and been engaged as a Legal Assistant for twenty-five years. I fell in love with Utah and can’t imagine living anywhere else (except, perhaps, on a beach in Bali.) When I’m not horsing around, you can find me at a hockey game, Utes game, reading, cooking or travelling. My daughter, Madeline, is also a horse lover and competed before college. We all know the story . . . kid goes away to school; mom inherits a horse. After trying out my new-found horsey skills in eventing for a couple years and with one too many unplanned dismounts, it became apparent, that it was time to change disciplines. I’ve enjoyed being involved with UDS and have been a member for 3 years. My lovely mare and I participate in as many shows as we can. I’ve seen how hard the leaders of this organization work to create opportunities for us to show, clinic and learn and I suspect it isn’t always easy or appreciated. If this committee finds me qualified to serve in the position of Treasurer, I will look forward to joining the efforts of UDS to promote the sport we love and support the members we serve. Below is a summary of my financial experiences. Operations Officer, California Federal Savings & Loan (3 yrs); Chair of Finance Committee/Treasurer for a Utah non-profit (6 yrs); Auction Co-Chair (financial piece), McGillis School (2 yrs). I have been a small business owner and am familiar with Quick Books and Excel. Thank you for your consideration. - Susan Helier
- Meet the Candidate: Education Director
Here is a bit about nominee for Education Director Mary Smithing: I am a new member of the Utah Dressage Society this year, and while I was not as active as I would have liked to be this past year, I would like the opportunity to become more involved with the organization. While I have never organized clinics I have held positions in other organizations like my collegiate equestrian team where I organized the trips to horse shows for the team and helped put on our own college horse show. I have also held board positions is other college organizations I belonged to like Alpha Chi Omega and Association of Computing Machines. I believe I could be a good Education Director because I am organized and can complete tasks in a timely manner. I also have plenty of time to give to the position because I only have dog and horse children, and have a flexible day job. Thank you for your consideration. - Mary Smithing
